Global Co-Head, BlackRock Investment Stewardship

John Roe is the Global Co-Head of BlackRock Investment Stewardship (BIS). In his role, John leads BlackRock’s global stewardship efforts, overseeing engagement and proxy voting activities across the firm’s index equity portfolios. He joined BlackRock in 2021 and had previously served as the Head of the Americas for BIS.

 

John has cultivated a breadth of experience and relationships in investment stewardship and corporate governance spaces throughout his career. He has served as a member of several industry bodies and initiatives to enhance governance and sustainable business practices, including the Council of Institutional Investors Corporate Governance Advisory Council and the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Blue Ribbon Commission on the Future of the American Boardroom. He is also a frequent speaker and commentator in the spaces.

 

Prior to joining BlackRock, John was a Partner and co-leader of the Governance and Corporate Stewardship practice at the corporate communications firm Joele Frank. While in this role, he advised boards of directors and senior executives on matters including board composition, executive compensation, disclosure and reporting, and shareholder engagement. He additionally led the Analytics and Corporate Advisory teams at Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), a proxy advisory firm, and served as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Compliance Officer of an investment advisor.

 

John also served on the White House staff that supported the development of the Office of Homeland Security in 2001-2002, was a consultant with McKinsey & Company, and served as an officer in the United States Coast Guard. John holds an MBA, with a concentration in finance and strategy, and a BS in electrical engineering.
