BlackRock names Susan Chan as Head of Asia Pacific

Andrew Landman and Hiroyuki Shimizu become Deputy Heads, James Raby appointed Chief Operating Officer and Hua Fan named as Head of China

ASIA PACIFIC, January 13, 2024 – BlackRock today announced the appointment of Susan Chan as Head of Asia Pacific, and named Andrew Landman and Hiroyuki Shimizu as Deputy Heads of Asia Pacific, all effective immediately.

Ms. Chan succeeds Rachel Lord, who relocates to London and takes on the role of BlackRock’s Head of International.

Based in Hong Kong, Ms. Chan will be responsible for leading the Asia Pacific region and overseeing the full range of business, client, investment and operational platforms serving wealth and institutional investors via BlackRock’s active, index, ETFs, alternatives and technology offerings.

Ms. Chan holds more than three decades’ experience in financial services and asset management industries, having played various leadership roles in capital markets, trading, investments and client business. Her tenure of more than 10 years at BlackRock has included leading the ETF and Index Investing business, managing the trading, liquidity and securities lending team, and overseeing the sustainable and transition investing group, as well as developing BlackRock’s onshore business in mainland China.

Ms. Chan previously served BlackRock as Deputy Head of Asia Pacific, Head of Greater China, and Head of Trading, Liquidity & Lending for Asia Pacific. She joined the firm in Hong Kong in 2013 as Head of iShares Capital Markets and Products for Asia Pacific, before becoming Head of ETFs and Index Investing, a role she held until 2021. Ms. Chan currently sits on BlackRock’s Global Executive Committee, as well as the Global Markets Committee and the firm’s Asia Pacific Executive and Steering Committees.

BlackRock has also named Head of Australasia Andrew Landman, and Head of Asia Pacific Institutional & Head of North Asia (Japan and South Korea) Hiroyuki Shimizu as Deputy Heads of Asia Pacific. In addition to leading teams in Australia and New Zealand markets, Mr. Landman will expand his role to oversee Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific Wealth business. Mr. Shimizu will continue to lead BlackRock’s Asia Pacific Institutional business, while expanding his remit to cover Taiwan, in addition to Japan and South Korea. Asia Pacific Head of Wealth James Raby will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer for Asia Pacific. Hua Fan becomes Head of China.

  • Chan most recently served as Senior Managing Director and Deputy Head of Asia Pacific, as well as Head of Greater China and Head of Trading, Liquidity & Lending for Asia Pacific. She also oversaw the Sustainable & Transition Investing group in Asia Pacific.
  • She was appointed Head of Asia and Head of Greater China in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
  • Chan joined BlackRock in 2013 as Head of iShares Capital Markets and Products for Asia Pacific. She was appointed Asia Pacific Head of ETFs and Index Investing in 2014 to run the firm’s ETF & Index businesses in the region.

  • Before joining BlackRock, Ms Chan was Head of Equity Structuring, Strategic Equity Transactions and DBx Asia Pacific at Deutsche Bank AG Hong Kong. She was previously Managing Director at Barclays Capital Asia Limited, holding various leadership positions in equity derivatives – the most recent being Head of Equity and Funds Structures, Asia Pacific.
  • Chan received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Finance in 2023. She also serves as a member of the Financial Infrastructure and Market Development Sub-Committee, under the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
  • Chan has lived and worked in Hong Kong and Japan.

 

Andrew Landman’s profile:

  • Landman joined BlackRock in 2012, most recently serving as Head of Australasia for the Australia and New Zealand markets.
  • He previously served as Head of Client Business for Asia Pacific, responsible for distribution and management of wealth and institutional relationships in the region, as well as Head of BlackRock Alternative Specialists Group for Asia Pacific.
  • He was also Head of Client Business in Australia, responsible for distribution and management of wealth, institutional, and iShares.
  • Prior to joining BlackRock, Mr. Landman was CEO of Ascalon Capital Managers, a subsidiary of BT Financial Group, and Head of Investment Strategy at BT Financial Group.

 

Hiroyuki Shimizu’s profile:

  • Prior to joining BlackRock in 2022, Mr. Shimizu was Global Head of Alternatives Distribution at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, where he also managed the firm’s Japan and South Korea businesses.
  • He has held various leadership roles at KKR and Goldmans Sachs, managing capital markets, private markets distribution, structured credit sales, and derivative sales.
