What are the risks?
  • Capital is at Risk. All financial investments involve an element of risk. Therefore, the value of your investment and the income from it will vary and your initial investment amount cannot be guaranteed.
  • Overseas investment will be affected by movements in currency exchange rates.
  • Emerging market investments are usually associated with higher investment risk than developed market investments. Therefore the value of these investments may be unpredictable and subject to greater variation.
  • Mining shares typically experience above average volatility when compared to other investments. Trends which occur within the general equity market may not be mirrored within mining securities.
  • Investment strategies, such as borrowing, used by the Trust can result in even larger losses suffered when the value of the underlying investments fall.

  4. Announcements
  5. Technical definitions

    Net Asset Value (NAV)
NAV performance is not the same as share price performance, and shareholders may realise returns that are lower or higher than NAV performance. All the trusts are traded on the London Stock Exchange and dealing may only be through a member of the Exchange.

    Gearing
Investment companies can borrow to purchase additional investments. This is called "gearing". It allows investment companies to take advantage of a long-term view on a sector or to take advantage of a favourable situation or a particularly attractive stock without having to sell existing investments. Gearing works by magnifying the company's performance. If a company "gears up" and then markets rise and the returns on the investments outstrip the costs of borrowing, the overall returns to investors will be even greater. But if markets fall and the performance of the assets in the portfolio is poor, then losses suffered by the investor will also be magnified.

Gross Gearing - the ratio of estimated Gross Assets to the Net Assets, expressed as a percentage.

Net gearing - The ratio of estimated Gross Assets minus cash and fixed interest to the Net Assets, expressed as a percentage. Note: negative cash i.e. overdrafts are treated as gearing.

    Z-Statistic
This statistic is designed to see whether the trust discount/ premium is close to the mean: a positive Z-Statistic is an indication that the current value is higher than the mean whilst a negative Z-Statistic indicates that it is lower.
