Capital at risk. The value of investments and the income from them can fall as well as rise and are not guaranteed. Investors may not get back the amount originally invested.

BlackRock serves clients who have a wide range of investment objectives, preferences, time horizons, and risk tolerances. Our role is to offer choice to help meet our clients’ objectives, transparency into how those choices could impact portfolios, and our research-based perspective on how structural trends could impact asset prices and investments over time.

As companies are increasingly measured on not only how much money they make, but also the societal and environmental impact they are having. Rather than judging by risk and return alone, some investors are looking to generate positive, measurable and additional sustainability outcomes.

Impact investing is a growing segment within sustainable investing. According to the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN): "Impact investments are investments made with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return.”1 At BlackRock, our core criteria for impact investing also requires adherence to the Operating Principles for Impact Management,2 for which BlackRock is a signatory.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the estimated annual investment gap to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 for developing markets alone, has increased from $2.5 trillion USD to $4.2 trillion USD.3 The magnitude of need creates more urgency and greater demand for innovative solutions addressing the SDGs. Impact investing provides the opportunity to invest in innovative discoveries and business models addressing social and environmental needs such as education, health care, financial inclusion, renewable energy and biodiversity.

Along the sustainable investment journey, impact Investing is found at the intersection between seeking measurable, positive environmental and social outcomes, and seeking long-term potential financial returns.
