Director, LDI

Paul Joss, Director, is a Client Portfolio Manager within the US and Canada Liability Driven Investing (LDI) business.  The team is responsible for design, implementation and ongoing mandate and risk management of LDI investment solutions across the fixed income risk spectrum. In doing so, the team delivers the capabilities and expertise of the Global Fixed Income platform and the wider BlackRock organization, providing solutions that encompass client specific requirements and capture market opportunities.

 

Prior to joining BlackRock, Paul served at The Hartford Financial Services Group ("The Hartford") with responsibilities including oversight for $5 billion defined benefit pension investments and other benefits-related investments. In 2017, Paul directed the investment-oriented aspects of The Hartford's $1.6 billion PRT transaction with Prudential. Paul served as the named portfolio manager for the $500+ million Duration Overlay Completion portfolio and also had investment and strategy responsibility for Hartford Investment Management Company (HIMCO) third-party pension LDI institutional sales effort. Other pension-related accomplishments included launch of private equity and real estate equity fund investing programs, launch of private placement note and commercial mortgage loan investment programs, and initiation and direction of a successful lump sum buyout offer to former employees. In insurance-related roles, Paul coordinated the launch of a new private market alternatives insurance dedicated fund (IDF) for Insurance Company Owned Life Insurance (ICOLI), developed the General Account investment and hedging strategy for a $14 billion block of PRT and structured settlement liabilities, and supported derivatives hedging for the $40 billion 3-Greek Variable Annuity GMWB hedging program.

 

Prior to joining HIMCO in 2007, Paul served plan sponsors, endowments, and foundations in Canada as part of the Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson) retirement and investment consulting practices.

 

Paul earned a B.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Lethbridge in 1999, an M.A. in theology from Regent College (Vancouver) in 2001, and an M.Sc. in financial mathematics from the University of Calgary in 2004. Paul is also a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (2006) and a CFA charterholder (2007).
