To better understand the growing role that factors and factor-based investing are playing in institutional portfolios, The Economist Intelligence Unit, on behalf of BlackRock, conducted a survey of 200 institutions around the world. The results show institutions employing factors in a range of activities—from risk management to asset allocation to investment strategies—and indicate that their use in all three areas will continue to expand.

Respondents provided their views on these questions and more:

  • How widespread is factor use?
  • What are institutional investors seeking to accomplish, and how successful are they?
  • What investment strategies are they pursuing?
  • Where is factor investing headed in the future?

Interviews with senior executives at eight asset owners from around the globe help to bring the findings to life, and brief commentaries from BlackRock experts provide additional market color and context.
