Meet the team

Hi, my name is Charlie Lanchester and I am the Portfolio Manager for the BlackRock High Conviction Australian Equity Fund.

Why Australian Equities?

I made the great decision in 1997 to move to Australia and really that's why Australian equities have become my focus.

Describe the fund in one sentence…

We're looking to invest in tomorrow's winners, finding talented management teams, reinvesting wisely back into their businesses. We look to be different from the crowd and all the other fund managers out there in the Australian market. And finally, we are powered by the extensive BlackRock platform, which gives us huge advantages in the market.

What do you like most about your job?

The thing I like most about the job is getting out of the office and visiting companies face to face, touring their facilities and just the range of businesses that we look at it and invest in is a really exciting part of what I do.

Your daily routine to keep your energy levels high?

I have a pretty strict and interesting daily routine. I meet a friend of mine at 5:00 AM down at Clovelly on the concrete where we do Tai Chi and then I have a dose of salt water with either a swim or a surf to start my day. This puts me in a great frame of mind.

Something not many people know about you?

An interesting fact about me is that I am a lover of a guy called Wim Hof and his practises. This involves some deep breathing and also the occasional ice bath, which I have located in my garage. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I love it.

One trend you are watching

E-commerce is a thing that I've been following for a number of years and I think going back to our concept of trying to find tomorrow's winners, we have a strong view that some of the names now listed on the Australian stock market are very exciting investment opportunities and particularly those names that have global reach of which there are a number.

Hi, I'm Madeleine Beaumont, and I am a Portfolio Manager at BlackRock.

Why Australian Equities?

I’m very lucky I’ve worked overseas. When I first graduated from University I lived in New York for 2 years and then after having a small stint back in Australia, I actually moved to London and worked in London for 12 years. I've had the luxury of seeing what it's like to work and live in other countries and I do think Australia has the brightest future of all the places I've lived because of the culture. Nick Cater wrote a book called “The Lucky Culture” and it talks about the egalitarian society that, hopefully, we can maintain because I do think it is positive for equities.

Describe the fund in one sentence…

The BlackRock High Conviction Australian Equities Fund is all about looking for companies and businesses where the management team have great business models and are reinvesting capital wisely.

What do you like most about your job?

What I love most about my job is actually seeing companies, and it's been hard for me, to be honest, during COVID to do this over Zoom because I really believe that you get a lot more out of a meeting when you see people face-to-face. The conversation can naturally evolve to places that you don't necessarily think about when you're quite structured in a Zoom forum.

Something not many people know about you?

I’m actually 1 of 5 children, so I guess I grew up in a chaotic household. I have a brother who is half Aboriginal, who is adopted and he is actually the same age as me, so I grew up going to school when I was white and he was black, and in those days that was quite different, I think, from a lot of other people.

One trend you are watching

Look, I think the trend for now is still all about technology and disruption. We like, as I said, to look at companies that are reinvesting capital wisely, but most importantly, they have to be at the forefront of the technology changes within their industry and that doesn't necessarily mean buying tech companies. We are looking to companies, for example, in the healthcare sector who are using technology to monitor patients. So it really goes across the portfolio, and I think we're really at the early stage of the technology revolution globally.

Hi, my name is Sam Theodore and I'm a Portfolio Manager with BlackRock in Australia.

Why Australian Equities?

Look around, it's the best place to live as probably the best place to invest.

Describe the fund in one sentence…

The BlackRock Australian High Conviction Equity Fund has the advantages of being a small nimble fund within a large organisation like BlackRock and all the advantages that can bring for investors.

What do you like most about your job?

I think the ability to look at companies all day is a real privilege. I grew up in a small business, a cafe where I used to spend school holidays in the back of the cafe counting two dollar coins, so understanding what drives businesses and how they may experience positives and negatives with various economic climates is extremely interesting, and it's a fantastic job.

What is your biggest achievement?

I guess, my wife is due to give birth in three weeks and we're going to have three children under five, so getting through that is probably going to be the biggest achievement.

Your daily routine to keep your energy levels high?

I'm not as crazy as some of my team members, probably coffee and a few doughnuts here and there, but I would say I do like going to, spending a couple of weeks in Greece every year, not that I've been able to COVID, but that's something that I do to recharge my batteries.

Something not many people know about you?

I guess, before I started my professional career, I was a barista. My family took coffee very seriously, my cousin actually represented Australia in the Barista Global Championships, and there is such a thing, believe it or not. So yeah, probably my coffee skills.

One trend you are watching

Look, one trends – it's hard, but probably the most important is inflation at the moment and whether it's transitory or it's structural.

Hi, my name is Nick Corkill, and I'm an Equity Analyst within the Australian Fundamental Equity team at BlackRock.

Why Australian Equities?

So why Australian equities? I mean, you're asking a Kiwi that, so any biases aside, I think Australia is not only a terrific market with a lot of innovative people and companies that I think are going to be a great success story to the future, but it's also a great place to live, which I think is going to hold it in good stead for the long-term, given how attractive the weather, the environment, the education and the healthcare system are. So I think we're well-placed here for the long-term.

Tell us a bit more about the fund

The BlackRock High Conviction Australian Equity Fund is quite a unique fund, in the sense that it's going to remain boutique size but supported by such a large platform like BlackRock. It brings together a benchmark unaware combination of the best ideas we can find, that we think will deliver meaningful returns over and above the benchmark for the future and those ideas are generated by an investment team with a very different range of experiences and backgrounds, so I think that blends together to create quite a unique culture.

What do you like most about your job?

Oh, there's lots of things I like about my job. I think, to be good at this job, it sounds cheesy, but you really have to love what you do, you can't think of it as a job.

What is your biggest achievement?

My biggest achievement, I'd have to say would be surviving six years working next to Sam. The guy's a market animal. He doesn't sleep, so I receive phone calls and messages about various market stories or things that impact the portfolio any time of day or night. We often joke we work night shifts. I'm a very early starter. I'm up at 4:30am and he goes to bed probably not too far from that, so we almost have 24 hour coverage here at BlackRock.

Your daily routine to keep your energy levels high?

To stay energised, probably like most people, the biggest thing for me is exercise. I know it's always tough for me and for everyone to find the time, juggling work and a young family, but anytime I can find a chance to get out there and do some exercise, everything just works better, my mind is clearer, I feel better, I'm more productive, so that's what I try and do and like Charlie, I do the odd ice bath, which I highly recommend.

Something not many people know about you?

Something most people probably wouldn't know about me is my first language was almost Spanish. At the age of three, my family moved to South America and we started dairy farming there in the eighties. So I grew up on a farm, milking cows and working on the farm. It's a very different upbringing and quite an unusual path towards funds management, I guess.

One trend you are watching

I think one of the most interesting trends I'm watching at the moment is – we've been in a disinflationary environment for the best part of 40 years and that's been driven by demographics, technology and increasing debt levels and we're sort of at a point now where we're seeing a lot of inflationary forces, as central banks try and inflate the money supply and governments are trying to spin their way to growth, to try and delever the global economy that has become very burdened with debt. I think that's a very interesting tug of war that will set the future direction for asset prices and winners and losers within the economy.

Nick Corkill

Australia is a terrific market with a lot of innovative people and companies providing great success stories for the future. Hear more from Nick, and why he recommends the occasional ice bath. [Viewing time: 3:30min]
